Roadtrippin' Colorado Style

April 21-23, 2006: Detour 1

In order to move northbound traffic to the new C/D bridge over Monument Creek in the Rockrimmon Blvd. and the Nevada/Corporate Centre exit area (a.k.a. Zone 2 to this site), COSMIX crews had to close the northbound lanes for 35 hours to construct access roads. They did this on a weekend to disrupt the least traffic, and for the most part it worked. Northbound traffic was moved to the left lane of the southbound lanes for about 1/2 mile. Because of the difference in height of the old roadbed and the C/D road, the old road had to be removed to construct a temporary connecting road between the old and new roadways. When the detour was removed, the northbound exit to N. Nevada Avenue was reopened after 4 months of being closed. Shots of what the detour looks like after the NB lanes were reopened have a grey background. Update: this is where the first fatality of the COSMIX project occurred. A construction worker's crane tipped over on the new NB N. Nevada exit offramp, killing him. This delayed the reopening of the offramp by about a day while the investigation took place.
