I mentioned this in my last blog post, but I’ll hit it again.
The Milton E. Proby Parkway is a new east-west arterial under construction in southern Colorado Springs. Its primary goal in life is to make it easier to get to our airport. Currently, the most direct route to our airport from the Interstate is South Academy (Exit 135) east then north to Drennan Road, a two lane road with multiple intersections with neighborhood streets. With Proby, one will still exit at South Academy and head east then north, exit onto Proby at a new Semi-directional T interchange, and head east on a four lane arterial with traffic signals at Hancock Expressway and Powers Boulevard (SH 21).
Here’s my issue with this. Yes, a route is needed to the airport, I will admit to that. However, back in the late 1980′s, city planners did this with the new US-24 bypass, the Martin Luther King By-Pass. At that time, the airport was located at the terminus of Fountain Boulevard, which is the road the MLK bypass drops you on. So we did have the direct route to the airport until the airport was moved to its current location.
The MLK bypass has its own problems. It’s a full-blown interstate-grade highway for about two miles off of the interstate but drops quickly to a four-lane, traffic-light-choked arterial. Plans at one time showed for the highway portion to continue all the way to Powers, but I haven’t heard anything about that recently.
So Proby came about and has the potential to be another MLK. Yeah, our tax dollars at work. At least there’s no airport moving issue in the foreseeable future…
