Roadtrippin' Colorado Style

1 year anniversary mega-trip

The r-dub site has been online one year as of 5/12/06, and I thought it best to celebrate with another roadtrip. I planned this one out before leaving home, and just kept going until the batteries in my camera were dead and the memory card in my camera almost full. What I was left with was a ton of pictures and a car with an additional 720 miles on it. Okay, maybe this trip was a little too long...

And don't you come back no more no more no more no more.

Heading out of downtown Denver now. We'll start to head west so we keep the sun at our backs. Better pictures that way, dontchaknow.

046Back to roadgeeking, here's the way onto I-25's HOV lanes. If the lanes are open for inbound downtown traffic (which they are currently), that traffic uses the flyover you see in the background to enter downtown on 19th.

047For the rest of us plebians that aren't good enough for a HOV lane, we get to go under a few bridges.

048Approaching I-25.

049Lotsa traffic goes north, can you tell?

050Shooting into the sun at the 20th. Street merge. Can you find the minor sign goof on those signs?

051Exiting to 70 from NB 25 puts on a long offramp. Before the second lane to Limon was open here, backups often stretched back to the beginning of the ramp, a little less than a mile back.

052My guess: a roadgeek was so impressed with the state name being in the shields that he/she didn't see the crash barrier. I'm probably wrong.

053Considering I had some chile con carne last night, my emissions have already been monitored, thank you very much.

054So I had to stop, back the car up to the sensor, and rev the engine. Okay, I didn't, but that would have been fun. At least until someone else came barreling down the ramp.

055CDOT, make up your mind! Is it 1500 feet or 1/4 mile? (No, they're not the same)

056I think the shield is hung so low so that drivers can see it under the streetlight. (Line of sight is our friend). And why does this streetlight have its own break in the guardrail?

057Just a shot of the curves inherent in this stretch of I-70.

058Well, something's at the next right. Hope it wasn't that important.

059A diagrammatic (kinda) at Wadsworth.

060See how there's a merging lane just after the VMS? That's the merge from I-76's END! (That's #6 for this trip)

061Another END! (#7) 391 heads south from here. I didn't even mean to get this one. I got the pics because I wanted to make fun of the lack of curved borders on the sign.

062Approaching end #8.

063End #8 in all its glory. We'll be exiting the interstate now.

064The first reassuarance shield on 58.

06558 travels through the southern edge of Golden. That's the Coors brewery in the foreground, and a reminder that "M" is for mountain in the background ;P (I couldn't resist the dig on the Colorado School of Mines)

066Golden provides tourists guide signs to its attractions.

067Just west of Golden, 58 loses its highway status...

068...with an intersection with US 6 and SH 93.

069Dueling ends! (#8a and 9 for me today) This is the last few feet of SH 58, and SH 93 starts to the right.

070Closer to the intersection.

071The first reassuarance shield for 93.

072Interesting font here.

073Doubling back to US 6/SH 58. Here's the last few feet of SH 93.

074Who here has heard Arlo Guthrie's Motorcycle Song? Sing along now: "I don't want a pickle, I just want to ride on my motorcycle. I don't want a tickle, I'd rather ride on my motorcycle. And I-I don't wanna die, I just want to ride on my motorcy........cle." Good times.

075Looking up SH 58. No, we're not going that way.

076Looking towards Clear Creek Canyon on US 6. We're not going that way, either.

077We're heading east on US 6 for a bit. This is what it looks like just to the west of Golden.

078Now you see why. I'm jonesin' for another end.

079This Taj Majal style building houses the Jefferson County offices. Tax dollars at work.

080Coming up on end #1a (got the other part, remember?)

081The west end of SH 470. For the first 1/2 mile of its existence, 470 is on bridges.

082Exiting onto 470. The sun in my eyes is getting annoying.

083The West 70 part is here so that drivers would remember they can't access WB 70 ahead anymore.

084470's first reassuarance shield. Speaking of WB 70, that sounds like a good idea.

085Just after 470, 70 climbs straight up the side of a mountain. I'm not kidding.

086This was an END! of a state highway. It was turned back within the last few years.

087While the straight up part is done, 70 still gains some massive altitude. Hence the lane restrictions. It's not uncommon for cars to be doing 75 past trucks doing 30. It gets hairy.

088Dual-purpose shot. First, the distances. We're not going all the way to Junction, sorry. Also, the semi behind the sign is actually on US 40. It closely parallels the I and silently merges up ahead.

089A shot of the EB's emergency truck ramp. I've always found it interesting that the ramp is alongside the road.

090Approaching the Genesse Park bridge. This was built without a center pier for a reason.

091This would be that reason. This also marks the end of the long climb uphill from Denver.

092Here's end #10.

093Sh 74 goes around that ridge then drops into Evergreen proper. And that orange truck ahead of us is a CDOT truck carrying another CDOT truck.
