Roadtrippin' Colorado Style

memorial weekend drive-a-round

In assembling my Colorado State Ends section, I realized I was missing some ends (Duh!), most notably in the Arkansas River Valley from the Front Range east. So, since it is the Memorial Day weekend, I thought I'd honor my American right to drive around aimlessly.

Old roads, new pics. Nice.

After that fascinating click around HS 120, I decide to do it again, just in the opposite direction. Why? So we could pick up where we left off on SH 115, of course.

113Coming back on US 50 towards SH 120 under some cloud cover. There's another instance where the wrong font was used on the shield.

202Looking down the first few feet of SH 120.

116Where 120 turns right. There's no indication this happens unless you look to the left and see the CR 120 sign.

118Another chance to get blasted.

119Entering the designated blasted area.

120Approaching the cement plant.

122Heading down into the Arkansas Valley.

123Approaching the cool bridge again.

124Curving around. The cool bridge is just ahead.

125Some older guardrails are spotted off to the right.

126Great shot looking down the cool bridge.

127Looking at the railroad bridge present here, too.

129The last stretch of the cool bridge.

130Back to bouncing over tracks and cement joints.

131Rock and Rail will never die!!!!! WOOOO-HOOOOO!

132Back under the conveyor belt.

133Going back across this bridge. Along 120 in both directions, I passed 4 cars. These three and the one in front of them. This is not a busy highway.

135Heading west. This view is just fantastic. It would have been better without all the dust in the air from the wind, but it doesn't suck right now.

137Approaching 115.

138The last feet of 120. There's no end sign present. Come to think of it, there was no 120 shield anywhere heading west. Interesting.

139An obvious move to the intersection when 115 was created.

140Back heading south (actually west) on 115.

141Entering Florence, Colorado.

140Another shot of the Truck Route banner.

145Just after the SB 67 intersection there's a multiplex. Wonder why 67 wasn't on top?

146Fabulous downtown Florence.

14767 heads north from 115 in Downtown. Also look at the interesting light pole and the electric line insulators on it. I haven't seen that anywhere but here. (For more visual treats, you can check out my Colorado 67 Trip.)

150115 curves just to the west of downtown. How many shields does it take, anyway?

151Almost looks like an east coast view.

152While stopped at a traffic light, I heard a gurgling. Looking to the left, I saw this old specimen of a gutter. These are throughout Florence.

153Old bridge goodness yet again.

154Still heading west on 115.

155A new widening.

156The stripes between the double yellows are allowed according to CDOT, but they're not usually used.

157So what is the widening for? Not much.

158A RR warning complete with a beacon.

159The crossing. Drivers traveling in this direction shold probably know when there's a train since the tracks are visible, but the opposite direction doesn't see the crossing until right upon it. This is the reason for the beacon.

160Old building close to the side of the road.

161Curving around. No, we haven't climbed into the mountains. We're just on the edge of a ridge.

162Well advertised cutoff to a few towns.

164More scenic happiness.

165Another abandoned building alongside the road.

166A quick glimpse at the building. And who's G and B? (All political jokes aside, that is)

167Another mutant crossorads sign. Funny thing is the left road looked busier than the right one.

169The Gold Belt Tour Scenic Byway heads back north here. Hmmm. I thought it continued south on 67.

170Entering Cañon City, SH 115 starts curving to match up with city streets.
