Roadtrippin' Colorado Style

memorial weekend drive-a-round

In assembling my Colorado State Ends section, I realized I was missing some ends (Duh!), most notably in the Arkansas River Valley from the Front Range east. So, since it is the Memorial Day weekend, I thought I'd honor my American right to drive around aimlessly.

Old roads, new pics. Nice.

Still on SH 115, but not for long. We'll then head east into Pueblo and points east.

171We're still zig-zagging on city streets. 115 changes streets 4 times inside Cañon city limits.

172One last curve. If you've been keeping up on cardinal directions, you'll notice we're about to turn north on SB 115.

173So which is worse: living on Cyanide Avenue or buying a house from Kurt Zerby?

174Rolling along in the southern parts of Cañon City.

175Approaching the Arkansas River one more time.

176The Arkansas is running at peak snow runoff levels. That current is fast and the river is deep.

177Bouncing over the railroad lines that we saw along SH 120 on the way to the intersection with US 50.

178The last few feet of SH 115.

179End sign goodness.

180Turning east on US 50 now, we see that this section of Cañon City isn't anything too special. The older (and nicer) parts of the city are to the left.

181Here's a lesson for you. If you're going to price your gas 13 cents higher than your competition across the street, you're not going to get any business. Simple as that. $2.56, by the way, is the cheapest I've seen gas in this state in a very long time. Too bad the r-dub-mobile is sitting at 3/4 tank.

183Picture: I got it! $Free to look at.

184Old wire span installation over way too many intersecting roads. There's a frontage road on the left side, too.

185Don't know why there's a line on the sign. That style hasn't been used in a long time, yet this is a new sign.

186How Cañon City signs its cross streets on 50. That's almostlegible.

187Exiting Cañon City. US 50 stays a four lane highway all the way to Pueblo.

188Hi Audi, I'm Ryan.

189Itty bitty text advertising minor road work.

190This is the view you're greeted with all the way to Pueblo.

191Approaching SH 67, which is also labeled as the Gold Belt Tour and an American Byway.

19267 only heads south from this intersection. I talk in detail about this on my CO 67 Page.

195Next interchange is with SH 115. We've seen this from the top of the bridge on this trip.

196A lot of travelers use 115 to head north instead of continuing east to I-25.

197We've got some time to Pueblo.

198Now that BET is showing old clips of In Living Color, I've had the chance to laugh at some seriously funny stuff again. The one I saw the night before the trip had the "Handi-man" skit in it, so I found this sign highly entertaining.

199Hey! Weren't we just here too?

200So the left lane has an advisory speed but the right doesn't?

201Where 120 starts.

203A little after the 120 intersection, US 50 dips into a valley.

112Here's the same shot looking from the other direction.

204Nope. Joke's too easy.

205We're entering Pueblo West now. We don't see much of the city from the highway.

206CDOT does not want you to go slow on this road.

207All the services are advertised like there's interchanges ahead: there's not.

208Approaching another END!

209You suppose that arrow was an afterthought?

210US 50 splits wide for this intersection. I don't know if that's to allow interchange development or what.

211At the exit for SH 45. Also, look closely at the Park and Ride sign on the left: there's flashers facing the opposite direction of traffic with a Wrong Way sign between them. I guess there's a problem with the traffic going the wrong way here.

212Heading south on 45 now. This is a western bypass of the downtown district.

214The first reassuarance shield is about a mile in on the road.

217Here's the Goodnight intersection. Sleep Tight Road and Don't Let The Bedbugs Bite Lane weren't signalized.

219Approaching the SH 96 intersection. I realize 45 is just a bypass road, but why doesn't CDOT put something south of Pueblo on this sign, like, perhaps, Colorado City or Trinidad?

220An old 76 Bike Route sign. I don't believe there's a connection to the Bike I-76 route we've seen in other wanderings on this site, but I may be mistaken.

221Shields for the intersection.

222Heading back north on 45 now.
