Jonesin' for a roadtrip, take 1
So I'm sitting around my home on the night of August 22, and I decide I need to get out of the city. Badly. I decide that bright and early the next morning, or whenever I finally decide to wake up, that is, I'm going for a drive. I decide to go west, but that's about all I know. And, as a treat to all of you, I decided to bring my camera along. One photo log is now up and ready for your viewing pleasure. Many of these photos are sized for a 1024x768 resolution monitor. Those viewing this site at a lower resolution may have problems. You've been warned. Hope you enjoy tagging along on my Sanity Break 2005 tour!
...with no particular place to go."
Heading down valley from Aspen towards Glenwood Springs. Highway 82 stays as a four lane limited access freeway for the most part right into Glenwood.
CO 82 even has a business route. This leads you into the town of Woody Creek. This is also where the HOV restriction ends.
Highway 82 passes right by a couple of old buildings here. I'm surprised these haven't been fixed up.
Eagle County has dressed up their county line markers. Normally, the markers have no emblem on them.
For those of you keeping track, this is the second distance sign we've passed on 82. Quite a difference from this one, huh?
BUSTED! By the camaro state trooper, no less. The other police car/SUV just happened to be driving by.
This is the only warning you get about SH 133. 133 leads you to Carbondale then on to Marble. Guess what's mined in Marble? Hint: it's not gold!
Glenwood Springs is the western terminus of 82. It's also where I'm stopping to fill up the tank, so the random dots and smudges will stop then, I hope.
Now entering Glenwood Springs. We've descended roughly 6300 feet in a little under 60 miles. Most of that within the first 20 miles, mind you.
Here's how Glenwood Signs their state highways on street signs. I wish all of CDOT would do something similar to this, but a little bigger so it was legible.
This is the eastern side of Glenwood Springs. It's also right before I fill up the car. There was 280 miles on the trip meter, and I put in 7 gallons of gas. TAKE THAT, SUV OWNERS! hehehe.
Downtown Glenwood Springs. Complete with a farmers market (hence the no right turn), decorative crosswalks (colored cement!), and plenty of parking (or so the signs say).
See? Very narrow. This bridge is definitely showing its age, too. Look at the guardrails. That design hasn't been used for at least 30 years. The building in the back is the famed Hotel Colorado.
I believe this is the official end of SH 82. It's not marked well at all on either end. Main traffic flow goes left here, then takes another left one block ahead to access I-70.
After the second left, you're presented with a choice. If you go under the bridge, you can only turn left to merge onto eastbound 70.
Next up is Glenwood Canyon. The canyon is my vote for the most scenic interstate highway segment in the United States...
