Roadtrippin' Colorado Style

Quick Denver Trippin'

I had a few hours to kill one day before heading to a friend's house for dinner, so I decided to check out the now-complete TREX Project in Denver. Of course, I had to take my camera along.

About to turn back

Well, we've made it this far, let's find a sign goof that Kevin Flynn pointed out to me once. Then it's time to head back to the Springs.

Ouch. That's what happens when large vehicles hit fencing material. I just like how an opportunistic grafitti artist wasted no time.

Arrows, arrows everywhere!

Interesting that SH 224 isn't marked on the mainline 25 exit, but it is on the HOV Lanes. Why are they more special anyway?

Lots of cement 'round these parts!

Three shades of cool sign action on the offramp.

At the merging HOV/HOT lanes. Now they're down here with the rest of us again.

More town advertisements on the interstate.

Okay, time to turn around. Let's look at this sign literally for a minute. Ouch?

Now for the sign goof that Kevin Flynn was talking about. This is on 84th Avenue. Anyone up for a Federal Route 25?

Reentering the interstate.

Alright road fans, here's where the sun and I start to battle. Many of these pics aren't up to my usual standards, but I wanted to keep them in for one reason or another. I have more pics that I'm not putting on the page sitting in the pics directory if you really want to see them. We're on pic 146 right now, by the way.

Yup. Still not used to the curved corners.

The southbound HOV/HOT lanes don't get as many exits as when you're headed northbound.

Left sign: made by ace signmaker. Right sign: made by signmaker flunkie.

The HOV/HOT lanes even get their own logo!

I'm bummed. The Junction 70 sign used to be a button copy sign in great condition. Then CDOT had to come out and muck it up with a newfangled sign.

Interesting that the signs are different when heading southbound.

Originally, there used to be an access point to the HOV lanes here. When that was closed and moved to the US 36 interchange, the stripes were left.

Another shot of the toll gantry for the HOV/HOT lanes.

As artsy-fartsy as you'll see from me.

Remember, folks: there's no construction at the I-25/Speer interchange. Just interchange modification. WTF?

Finally CDOT wises up and restrict trucks through the low bridge section.

Way to tack on the Ahead part! Sign og Fugliness™, anyone?

The Colfax/I-25 interchange is one messload of ramps.

That's some damn fine artwork there.

Slug bug! Lime green!

The only 3 lane section left on 25 in southern Denver coinsides with the last 3 lane section on the northbound side.

Looking ahead at the Browdway viaduct.

Anybody seen a spare sign?

Interesting thing here is that if you look at the way the bridge is striped, there was no reason to put the exit only part on this sign. It'll always be this kind of exit.

Entering the TREX project zone.

Wide with auxillary lanes up the ying-yang. Nice.

Well signed braided ramp there.

The Washington Street overpass.

The covered part here hides a station for the light rail. Above it is a park.

About to head under Louisiana. Not the state, silly.

More bridge pron.

The merging traffic flies over the light rail lines.

Bridge and sign and light rail goodness.

At the University exit. The exit merges into the onramp from Emerson. This is just like what happened at the Emerson exit/Broadway merge.

Southbound I-25, exit 205.

Empty sign gantry. The southbound side of the interstate is still seeing some of the remaining TREX construction.

See? Told ya.

Approaching Colorado Boulevard.

Maintenance staircase covered with a steeply sloping roof. This just looks odd in real life.

This is quasi-urban interstate driving at its finest.
