Roadtrippin' Colorado Style

jonesin' for a roadtrip 3

Well, it's time for me to hit the road again. I'm getting bogged down at work again, and it'll help me out if I take off and clear my mind. This is a big trip, and it'll be a bit before we hit home again. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the pictures!

Enough with this damn two lane state highway nonsense.

Now that we're in Denver, let's skirt around the city on some interstates.

140Ghetto signage.

141Awww! It's a baby VMS.

142SH 83 curves around the eastern edge of Cherry Creek dam. There's a small write-up on what SH 83 used to do on Dale Sanderson's site.

143Because of some massive traffic counts, CDOT came through here and installed a NB 83 to SB 225 flyover.

144Closer to the flyover. We're traveling on the NB 225 ramp at this point.

145I guess it's better than a corporate name. "Cingular Flyover at 225" doesn't have the same ring.

146Because of the tightness of a merge lane coming into the offramp area, CDOT gave us a way to get back to 83.

147We, however, didn't take the slip ramp back to 83. Welcome to I-225!

148Big signage for the offramp. Too bad nobody follows it.

149Since there's no flashers present here, CDOT yellowed-out the "When Flashing" part. This is not the only sign like this in the state.

150Because of close proximity to businesses and intersections, the southbound exit to Alameda Avenue curves over the interstate and connects with the northbound ramps. Here's what I'm talking about.

151The ramps are obviously newer than Alameda Avenue.

153At the Sixth Avenue exit. As you can see, the highway through here is about ready for expansion in the form of an additional inside lane. Can't come too soon.

154Just after Sixth Avenue, 225 widens dramatically.

155Missing shield alert! Colfax is also BR 70.

156This distance sign implies that 225 will eventually go past 70, but I have found no indicator this interstate was ever intended for anything more than what it is now.

157A shot of the stack that is the northern END! of 225.

158Coming down off of the topmost layer of the stack onto WB 70.

15965mph wall of truck. Gulp.

160Coming up on I-270. The hashed out lane is for future expansion.

161US 36, which we are traveling on currently although it's not signed, follows 270.

162Old sign bridge with new signs.

163We're heading on 270 now. 270 uses the original cement in a lot of sections.

164In other spots, 270 sports new cement.

165This is a loud road when you're on 40-year-old concrete.

166270 pases by a few refineries on its way northwestwards.

167Neat-o! A three-rail bridge rail. This is a rarity in the state. Wow, I'm amused easily.

168Exit 1 has recently undergone some major retrofitting. It used to be a trumpet interchange with 76.

169Cheap super glue. Didn't hold the sign.

170So, it's the Platte River, huh? When did So become an acceptable replacement for South?

171At the new exit for 76.

172Interesting that the ramps get their own mileage signs.

173The ramps to WB and EB 76.

174Bipping down the extension of 76 now. Check out the exit 0 comin' up!

175I don't know why the rightmost lane isn't open through here.

176The END! 270 and BEGIN! 36 signs in all their glory. Problem is, US 36 doesn't really begin here. But I guess a RESUME! sign wouldn't make sense.

177As soon as the interstate designation ends the shoulders go away. There's a lot of lanes jammed into a tight spot here.

178The biggest Do Not Enter sign I've come across in my travels. There's two more this size on each side of 25's HOV/HOT lanes, too.

179US 36 in all its urban glory.

180When the shoulder's at a premium, tack on the signage.

181Alright, why'd the Jolly Green Giant stub out his cigarette here?

182I always thought that I-270 should be changed to I-170 and ran all the way up to Boulder. Then I see parts of 36 like this and know why that won't happen.

183I think this bridge is next on the replace list. That's the only reason why I see that both distance signs are missing.
